LWIC E011
…. Relocated and it's taken me for ever to settle in but here I am. Left my computer cable behind and it has no battery so that's kept me back for a while among other reasons. I'm typing this out on a 13 year old Surface Tablet running Debian 12. Yes, Linux on a Microsoft tab. Any how, straight to business.
Building a local search engine based on the paper : The Anatomy of a large-scale hypertextual web search engine.
In the next 10 weeks we'll build a search engine. We shall extract theory from the Google paper (The anatomy of a large scale hypertextual search engine). It's the paper based on which the earliest version of Google was built.
Last Week In Code E010: Reflection

Last Week In Code E010 & Last Week in Cyprus
I like how the series' name somehow saw this coming. I had no idea the same acronym to mean what happened last week in my world of code I was going to be able to use for refrence to my 'last week in Cyprus'. Which, it now is. How cool… !
So what was I doing this week? Well, like the week before the last one, not much. A lot of packing and prep for my next destination. I should be writing my next update from there. I'm guessing you too notice that's a very long time not actively programming. And I notice too. I am actually starting to feel the toll of it. But settling I hope should some how fix that.
Last Week In Code E009
3 months old is it? Last week in code episode 9. How coool!. So what was flying last week? Well, I was out on holiday so there wasn't much coding going on.
However, that time off gave me space to reflect on a number of issues. Some of which I'd like to share about.
What I learnt this week.
Your skills are more perishable than you think
If you work at your computer , programming and solving problems daily, it soon becomes the norm. The intensity of it starts to weigh low on your brain. But after just a few days AFK, it is common to experience a level of friction getting back to speed. The longer the holiday, the more intense the friction.
Last Week in Code E008
Wait, is that 8 weeks??! Yaay!! Interesting how few 56 days can turn out to be. I didn't see this coming this far. Anyways. What has been rolling since the last post?
A lot. Reshaping this site's structure to match my mind's as I mentioned I would in lwic e006. Started producing 'content'. Posted some of that on my instagram channel. I think there was no coding at all. Still, there was a lot of learning worth sharing. Let's get to that.
Last Week In Code E007
Its interesting how fast time flies. Its already 7 weeks? A whole 49 days or so since the first episode.
So, I spent last week building small apps and writing. Reading and writing as usual. And erm.. yeah. I learnt quite a lot from that. Here, I'll share.
What I learnt this week.
Evolution is from simple to complex. Not the other way round.
I recently took time off to build an app I have had in my projects folder for ages. Its a cli-first finance app. Its like, you don't open and click and wait to get things done. You type short commands, press enter to get it all done.. More on that later.
Last Week In Code E006
Its E006. YAY. It has been a week and a half. I spent most of it doing archival work. The last part of the week I sunk into setting up mediawiki. I did some interview prep type questions also and I uploaded some of the solutions. But that wasn't as serious as the archival tasks.
I am preparing to change locations. I am not so sure about my new location's internet efficiency or its affordability. So I think I will so much need to have local access to critical information sources. As usual, the whole process and other small tasks I did taught me certain things I'd like to record right here, for sharing and future reference.
Last Week in Code E005
It’s LWIC E005! Cool. So I was AFK for a huge proportion of last week. But for the later half of it (which was Thursday up until Sunday), I spent most of my time reading and making notes with not so much programming. And as usual, there is always experiences to share. Not so much though since I only had half a week.
The Elevated Confidence From Documenting Understanding
I eventually got to write an article on Baye’s theorem. It was a simple one as, that was my aim: to make a seemingly hard to understand topic simple. Most of the lessons from this task, I mentioned in last week’s update. But I think there’s parts of the experience that I hadn’t felt fully yet. I’ll share what I learnt from those.
Last Week in Code E004
It’s four weeks already! I spent most of last week writing. I mean, I did give time to other projects beyond writing too but it was mostly writing. I thought I had quite a lot to write about and that I was going to produce as much. But that’s not really what happened. I only wrote 3 articles. There was some lessons to learn from that still. And I’ll share those.
Last Week in Code 003
I like self hosting but have not yet gotten a hosting service to stick to so I have to go through the whole reinstall process every time I switch operating systems. Yes, I run my apps on my PC. So I spent most of the past week setting up some applications. I set up Navidrome for my music server, Firefly III for financial management and Jellyfin for managing my movies and tv shows collection. I also played around some with Snapcast but then learnt how much I’d have to read before I’d be able to use it like a craftsman. So I dropped it.
Last Week In Code E002
Last week I decided I’d be going on an AI fast. Listed what services AI was providing me with then tried to get alt providers. For the mindless AI usage, I think the underlying cause was boredom, then outright addiction to the solution. I chose to use that time for a better addiction. An addiction to reading tech blogs. I’ve heard about Hacker News before but I’d never read much from the website. Well I discovered its way more than I thought. Which wasn’t much really. But that changed this week.
